Eesti Riiklik Sümfooniaorkester / Estonian National Symphony Orchestra

William Grant Still on Aafrikas sündinud Ameerika helilooja, esimene sellise taustaga, kes pääses juhatama Ameerika parimaid sümfooniaorkestreid, esimene, kelle sümfoonia (nr 1 “Afroameerika”) võeti Ameerika juhtivate orkestrite repertuaari ning esimene, kelle ooper jõudis maineka ooperiteatri (New York City Opera) lavale.

Stilli esimene sümfoonia, mis ühendab traditsioonilise sümfooniažanri bluusile omaste rütmide ja harmooniatega, on ehe näide mustanahaliste kultuuri integratsioonist klassikalisse muusikasse.

Kõik need teosed on Neeme Järvi juba üle 20 aasta tagasi salvestanud koos Detroiti SO-ga briti plaadifirmale Chandos.

It is the customary that the programmes prepared by the principal conductor of ENSO include something new, exciting and perhaps also unexpected for our audiences. This time maestro Neeme Järvi and the orchestra will travel in the world of blues and jazz, performing works by two composers of African descent.

US jazz legend Duke Ellington (born Edward Kennedy Ellington) – an extraordinary pianist, composer and band leader – is undeniably a pivotal figure in the history of American music. The programme will feature his works arranged for symphony orchestra, including the famous “Solitude”.

William Grant Still was one of the first African born American composers, who went on to conduct the best American symphony orchestras, and whose symphony (No. 1 “Afro-American”) has been included in the programmes of leading American orchestras and whose opera was staged at a renowned opera theatre (New York City Opera). His Symphony No. 1, which combines the traditional symphony with blues-like rhythms and harmonies, is a fine example that integrates Afro-American culture into classical music. All these works were recorded by Neeme Järvi and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra more than 20 years ago for the British label “Chandos”.
